E-Way Bill Login Not Working: Causes and Fixes
Find the message you see in the table below. The most common causes are the wrong username (often the GST portal username), a temporary block after wrong attempts, OTP delivery problems, or a GST registration that is no longer active. If the portal itself is down, the official E-Way Bill 2.0 portal is an alternative.

“Invalid username or password”
The official FAQs explain that this message means the username, the password or both are wrong. Check these in order:
- Are you using your E-Way Bill username? It's not your GSTIN and not your GST portal username.
- Is caps lock on, or is your keyboard set to another language?
- Did someone in your business change the password recently?
- Still unsure? Use Forgot Username or Forgot Password rather than guessing.
Account temporarily blocked
To protect accounts, the portal blocks login for a short period after repeated wrong attempts. The block lifts automatically. Wait a few minutes, then try once with details you're sure about, or reset the password. Each further wrong attempt during the block can extend your wait.
Account frozen or inactive
A frozen or inactive account usually means the GST registration linked to it has been cancelled or suspended. Check your registration status on the GST common portal. If you are a sub-user, the main user may have frozen your sub-user ID; ask them to check user management.
GSTIN blocked for e-way bill generation
This is different from a login problem. You may be able to log in, but the portal refuses to generate e-way bills for your GSTIN. Under Rule 138E of the CGST Rules, generation is blocked when a taxpayer hasn't filed returns for two or more consecutive tax periods (GSTR-3B for regular taxpayers, or the quarterly statement for composition taxpayers).
- File the pending returns
File them on the GST common portal.
- Wait for the status to update
Once the system records the filing, the GSTIN is unblocked on the E-Way Bill portal. This normally isn't instant.
- If you need it unblocked before filing
An application can be made to the jurisdictional tax officer in Form GST EWB-05. The decision rests with the officer.
Rule 138E applies to the blocked person whether as supplier or as recipient, so your customers and suppliers also can't generate e-way bills that name your GSTIN in those roles while it is blocked. Filing on time keeps your trading partners' movements running too.
Captcha not accepted or not loading
- Refresh the captcha and type it immediately, because captchas expire.
- Check characters that look similar, such as 0/O and 1/l.
- If the captcha image doesn't load, reload the page, disable aggressive ad-blockers for the official site, or try another browser.
OTP problems
If the password is accepted but you're stuck at the OTP screen, the issue is with OTP delivery or the method you selected. Our E-Way Bill login OTP guide covers SMS delays, the Sandes app, NIC-GST-Shield and changed mobile numbers.
The portal is slow or not opening
Try the E-Way Bill 2.0 portal
Since 1 July 2025, the official E-Way Bill 2.0 portal at ewaybill2.gst.gov.in runs alongside the main portal with mirrored data. If the main portal is unavailable, many tasks can be carried out there.
Rule out your own connection
Check whether other websites load. Try mobile data instead of office Wi-Fi, since some office networks block government domains.
Check for announcements
Planned maintenance and outages are usually announced on the portal's home page and on the GST common portal's news section.
Browser and device checks
- Use an up-to-date browser. Clear the cache and cookies for the portal if pages behave strangely.
- Allow pop-ups for the official site if printing or reports don't open.
- Make sure your device's date and time are correct, which matters for secure connections and app-based OTPs.
- Avoid browser extensions that auto-fill or alter forms on the portal.
Still stuck? Contact the official helpdesk
If none of these fixes work, use the official helpdesk and grievance options listed on the E-Way Bill portal, which include region-wise contacts. Have your GSTIN, the exact error message and a screenshot ready. Never share your password or OTP with the helpdesk; they don't need it.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my E-Way Bill login not working?
The most common reasons are using the wrong username (such as the GST portal username), a temporary block after wrong attempts, OTP delivery problems, an inactive GST registration, or portal downtime.
What does 'invalid login credentials' mean on the E-Way Bill portal?
It means the username, password or both don't match the portal's records. Check you're using your E-Way Bill username and the correct password, or use the Forgot Username and Forgot Password options.
How do I unblock my E-Way Bill login?
A temporary block after wrong attempts lifts automatically after a short wait. If your GSTIN is blocked for e-way bill generation because of unfiled returns, file the pending returns, or apply to the tax officer in Form GST EWB-05.
What can I do if the E-Way Bill portal is down?
Try the official E-Way Bill 2.0 portal at ewaybill2.gst.gov.in, which works alongside the main portal with the same data.
Ready to log in?
Use only the official government portal. ewaybillogin.com never asks for your password or OTP.
