E-Way Bill Limit and State-Wise Thresholds

Last reviewed: By ewaybillogin Editorial Team
Short answer

For inter-state movement, an e-way bill is needed when the consignment value exceeds ₹50,000. For movement within a state, each state notifies its own limit, which may be ₹50,000 or higher, and some states set separate limits for movement within a city. Check your state's notification for the current figure.

The ₹50,000 rule

Rule 138(1) of the CGST Rules requires an e-way bill before goods are moved when the consignment value exceeds ₹50,000. This applies across India to inter-state movement. Some movements need an e-way bill whatever the value, such as inter-state movement from a principal to a job worker. See when an e-way bill is required.

How consignment value is calculated

  • It is the value of the goods as declared in the invoice, bill of supply or delivery challan, determined under Section 15 of the CGST Act.
  • It includes CGST, SGST/UTGST, IGST and cess charged on the goods.
  • It excludes the value of exempt supplies when the invoice covers both exempt and taxable goods.
  • The threshold is checked per consignment (document), not per vehicle. A vehicle with several consignments under ₹50,000 each may not need e-way bills for them, subject to state rules.

Inter-state vs intra-state

Two kinds of threshold
MovementThresholdWho sets it
Inter-state (between states)Consignment value above ₹50,000CGST Rules: same across India
Intra-state (within one state)As notified by the stateEach state or union territory

State-wise intra-state thresholds

States change their intra-state limits from time to time, and many published lists are out of date. We only show a figure where we could find a dated source, and even then you should confirm it with the state's commercial tax department before relying on it.

Why we don't list a number for every state: many websites copy old tables. A wrong limit can lead to goods being detained. If your state isn't confirmed here, check its notification or the “state-wise rules” information on the official E-Way Bill portal, or ask your tax adviser. If you have an official notification we've missed, please send it to us.

Is the E-Way Bill login different in my state?

No. Whether you're in Delhi, Kerala, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka or Uttar Pradesh, you log in on the same national portal at ewaybillgst.gov.in with the same steps. Only the intra-state value limits and some state exemptions differ. See E-Way Bill login.
